The comments to our media product

Emma Carragher:

‘I loved the filming of the brick bits because it looks so mysterious. And the credits were excellent. Well done!’

Guy Stanley:

‘The movie had an effective message, especially the trapped behind the bricks bit. The lighting was pretty cool. The acting was good and the credits were really clever.’

Giulia di Lorenzo:

‘The flickering light, credits and scene were so mysterious and really amazing. The music in the scenes sets a feeling of tension, scariness and suspense.’

Hannah Winter:

‘The credits were really good and the symbolic statement was well represented by the bricks and the basin scene. The editing in the end made the sequence was worth seeing.’

Adam Grant:

Good job on the credits and the movement involved. Also liked the background for your titles and the fact that the narrative wasn’t obvious. Created interest! The bricks bit also worked well’.

Task 7: Looking back at our preliminary task, what do we feel we have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Monday, 29 March 2010

Task 5: How did your product attract or address your audience?

Task 4: Who would be the audience for our media product?

Our group has decided that our main target audience should be of both genders between the ages of 25 to 35 years old with a perhaps older secondary audience maybe in the realms of 40 to 50 years old. In terms of social classes we think a middle class educated audience is our main target.

We chose Sam Turton as our ideal audience member. He is a 25 year old male, working as a psychology teacher in a private school and enjoys the thrill of the suspense when watching thrillers.
He has been to university and has a degree in modern philosophy.
We asked him various questions including what his favourite hobbies are; reading and making music, his favourite movie genre; sci-fi and his favourite film; The Big Labouski to give ourselves a more 3D view of him.
For testing if we chose our ideal audience member,we asked the 64 year old female librarian. We there experienced our non-ideal audience member; Alison is not further educated, does not enjoy thrillers and essentially doesn’t like being frightened.

Task 3: What kind of media institution might distributed our media product and why?

A media institution is an established, often profit-based organization that deals in the creation and distribution of advertising, entertainment and information services. They are largely trans-national in nature but can exist in a smaller/national form. Examples of worldwide media institution would be; News International, The Walt Disney Company, 21st Century Fox and Time Warner.
Our sequence would probably be a British or French Independent film production as our budget is not particularly high. But it could also be a Hollywood production but either way it wouldn’t be summer or winter blockbuster, but more in spring or autumn not during holidays. Because our piece is the opening to a psychological thriller, our main emphasis is on the message that we are trying to convey rather than creating fantastic visual effects as a high value production like Hollywood would do. Our media product would probably be like ‘The Gift’ with Cate Blanchlett or ‘Gothika’ with Halley Barry, a psychological thriller.

Those two movies are psychological thriller and they are dealing with the mental behaviour of the main actors. Our product is showing the mental behaviour by the bricks and the washing bit. The audience doesn’t know if she makes it up in her mind or if it really happened. The flashbacks or visions are the prove for her ‘speciality’.
The idea that it could be promoted and distributed by an independent film company and represents this movie then on a movie festival, is something really interesting because if the company does that it could guarantee success in that a bigger film company might see it and makes a remake out of it. However it is very difficult to be lucky enough to get accepted at a film festival so that your film will actually be seen, but still I think it is a great idea because you do the movie the way you like it and then the Media Institutions can think of whether they believe it is worth to do a remake. I think if I would show my film at a film festival an British or French Institution. However I would also try to target our film to „Hammer Film Productions“, which is also known as „Hammer Horror“. It is a film production company based in the United Kingdom that used to dominate the horror film market and used to do great successes like “Frankenstein” and “Dracula”. Now they are restarting and therefore they would maybe use our horror film. I think they would be good because they also have the long-time experience from the past because they were founded in 1934.

Task 2: How does our media product represents particular social groups?

Task 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product uses conventions and forms of a real media product by the different shots and angles.
To begin with the first shot in the table, the close up of the girl’s eyes, this shot represents that the girl is thinking or dreaming which shows that the thriller is a psychological thriller. It represents the expectations of the audience.

The second shot is Luke with a knife which does not give the impression of a psychological thriller to the audience because the audience knows already that he is going to be violent.
The audience would probably not expect a shot like that.

The third shot is the strangling one and represents the violence directly. It gives an expectation because of the shot before which already had shown the going-to violence.

The forth shot is Hermione walking with a baby in her hands which gives an impression of the caring mother which is a good contrast to the violence. The lightness gives the audience the impression of the ‘good’ side. This shot is on hand expected because of the contrast to the violence and darkness but the audience didn’t expect a mother with a child.

Shot 5 represents the bricks which are building their self around the girl which shows the psychological aspect because it is open if the girl is building the wall in her mind or in reality. This shot is expected and uses the forms of a real media product.

The 6th shot is representing the title sequence how our thriller is called. The credits are advising that the movie is a thriller or horror film. The background is dark and leads to the feeling of danger to the audience. The moving and coming in letters are giving the feeling of insecurity.
The credits are similar to real media products.

Shot 7 is representing the face of the girl; she has a neutral face expression and is staring directly into the camera. This shot gives the impression of that she is thinking which shows again the psychological aspect of the thriller.

Shot eight is representing the basin where she is washing her hands and having suddenly blood on her fingers. This represents the violence and the psycho because the audience doesn’t know if she if making the blood up or if she bleeds because of her extreme washing of her hands.
Blood is used in real media products and strengthens the realism of our media product.

The last shot is an over the shoulder shot and so the audience can see her point of view. The appearance of the bricks shows again the psychological part of the thriller and how she is just standing there and the bricks are building from alone.
Our media product uses, develops and challenges forms and conventions of real media products by representing contrasts and giving by little details the audience questions which are leading to the assumption that the thriller is a psychological one.
